The UC Davis Cross Cultural Center annually hosts a week-long series of events known as “La Raza Culture Days” dedicated to the hardships and achievements of the Latino/Chicano community. This particular event “La Gran Tardeada” included food booths, entertainment, a children’s fair, a health fair, and immigration clinic information, and fun for the whole family. It also happened to land on Cinco de Mayo, perfect for the occasion!

In March 2012, our Special Project Director Danica Liongson had a vision to showcase the true diversity the Davis community has to offer. What better way to express this than through a feature-length documentary generated by the Davisites themselves? In discussing the plans with our Executive Producer Andrew Florio and the rest of the AggieTV Team, the “Davis in a Day” (DIAD) project was thus born. The inspiration for this user-generated documentary stems from “Life in a Day”, a film by Ridley Scott in collaboration with National Geographic and YouTube. But for AggieTV’s “Davis in a Day,” rather than recording different perspectives from around the world, we are working on a much smaller scale, gathering the different perspectives of UCD students & faculty, and Davis locals so as to show the world what Davis is really all about.

Marketing the Project

Big props to our Marketing Director Stephen McKone for creating such an awesome design! The AggieTV team styled up their Facebook Timelines for a few days with the oh-so-cool cover photo to advertise the DIAD documentary.

Flyers and stickers with the unique flower logo were also passed out on campus weeks prior to the big day.

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look on what’s been going down at the studio!

The Big Day

After a long countdown, the big day of May 10, 2012 has finally arrived! Recordings of the day ranging from 12:00AM – 11:59PM are eligible for submission. **The deadline to submit has now been extended to Sunday, May 13th!**

Video Submissions

The AggieTV staff were excited to have received many video submissions throughout the course of the day. So far we have received over 50 hours worth of footage!

Video perspectives range from students getting ready in the morning, sitting in a lecture hall, driving a Unitrans bus, enjoying a game of Quidditch, observing a squirrel, and indulging in a late-night snack at In-’N'-Out.

Interviews

Short clips of our everyday lives won’t be the only ones making the cut into the documentary. Many interviews were conducted as well, with students and faculty discussing their experiences at Davis.

I got the chance to interview Joshua Kim (Left) and Bryan Hutchinson (Right), Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed professional business fraternity on campus. We talked about graduation, their best and worst experiences at Davis, their thoughts on love as a college student, and what they considered to be the best places in downtown to get a drink. “Definitely [Café] Bernardo’s for the Wikis,” says Hutchinson.

The Studio

The studio iMacs were rearranged so as to make for a smooth and efficient production process.
